The Effect of Hypertension Excercise on Reducing Blood Pressure in the Elderly at Wonokromo Elderly Posyandu
Abstract
Elderly people still struggle with hypertension, which can have major consequences if left untreated. To help control blood pressure, non-pharmacological strategies including frequent exercise are advised. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether exercise for hypertension may lower blood pressure in senior citizens at the Wonokromo Elderly Posyandu. A one-group pretest-posttest strategy was used in a pre-experimental design. Purposive sampling was used to choose 33 senior participants. Over the course of four weeks, the intervention involved twice-weekly, 30-minute bouts of antihypertensive exercise. A digital sphygmomanometer was used to assess blood pressure both before and after the intervention. The Paired t-test with a significance threshold of 0.05 was used to analyse the data. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased after the intervention, according to the results. The mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 152.52 ± 8.445 mmHg to 141.00 ± 6.978 mmHg (p = 0.000). Similarly, the mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 90.85 ± 3.365 mmHg to 83.52 ± 2.078 mmHg (p = 0.000). These findings indicate that hypertension exercise has a statistically significant effect on lowering blood pressure in the elderly. This intervention can be recommended as a routine, simple, and effective non-pharmacological program at elderly community health posts to support hypertension management.
