Abstract

Introduction: Subperiosteal implants, introduced in the 1940s, offer a less invasive alternative to endosseous implants, especially in cases of severe bone atrophy. With technological advancements, their customization allows for better anatomical adaptation. This systematic review evaluates their effectiveness, stability, biocompatibility, and functional outcomes in complex clinical situations.This review aims to assess the effectiveness of customized subperiosteal implants by analyzing technological advancements, their use in cases of complex bone deficiencies, and their stability, biocompatibility, and functional performance.A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases to identify studies evaluating the effectiveness of customized subperiosteal implants, considering recent technological advancements. The risk of bias in the included studies was assessed using the 2020 checklist from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI).Out of 6,101 articles identified, 375 were selected for title and abstract screening. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 articles were included consisting of 5 retrospective cohort studies and 6 case series studies. Customized subperiosteal implants provide an effective solution for patients with severe bone loss due to their precise anatomical fit. Advances in imaging and computer-aided design (CAD) enhance their reliability. While the results are promising, further research is needed to improve their long-term durability and performance.
